What is psychosis?
Psychosis happens when a person no longer agrees with consensual reality. They could hear or see things other people can’t hear or see, develop beliefs that are abnormal compared to their typical beliefs, or have behavior that doesn’t make sense to people around them.
Most people experience their first episode between the ages of 15-25, although some people are much younger or older.
Psychosis is like a fever. It means something is “wrong", but we’re not sure what.
Psychosis can occur due to medical conditions like epilepsy or multiple sclerosis, or it can occur due to mental health difficulties.
Treatment
Positive symptoms of psychosis often lands people in the psychiatric hospital. This include hallucinations, delusions, or disorganization.
The average hospital stay lasts 1-2 weeks. Treatment includes medication management and psychotherapy.
The prognosis for psychosis can be good for individuals who catch it early.
The Role of Therapy
Psychotherapy is an important part of treatment when used in conjunction with medications.
Therapy modalities include CBT and ACT.
In terms of every day life, gaining insight and learning psychological skills can greatly improve functioning.
